Sperm donation is a procedure in which a man donates semen—the fluid containing sperm released during ejaculation—to help an individual or couple conceive a baby. Donated sperm can be used either for intrauterine insemination (IUI), where it is injected into a woman's reproductive organs, or for in vitro fertilization (IVF), where it is used to fertilize mature eggs in a lab. This process is known as third-party reproduction. Donors can choose to remain anonymous or be known to the recipient.

We encourage you to review the following sections before initiating an application, which is expected to take 15 to 20 minutes. If you have any questions or need more information, please feel free to contact us. Our donor coordinator is available to answer your questions and assist you throughout the application process.

Why Sperm Donation

Sperm donation helps individuals or couples conceive a baby. You might choose to donate sperm to assist those who are unable to conceive, such as a woman without a male partner or a couple facing male infertility. Typically, you will be compensated for each donation that passes the screening process. This payment is intended to reimburse you for your time and any related expenses.

Sperm Donation Cycle

In general, a sperm donation cycle takes 1-2 weeks to complete, excluding matching and screening. Sperm donation is often combined with in vitro fertilization (IVF): the sperm is retrieved from the donor and then used either for intrauterine insemination (IUI) or to fertilize mature eggs in a laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the female recipient or gestational carrier. A typical sperm donation process includes:

  1. Matching: Our staff will match you with the recipient.
  2. Screening: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires basic screening for infectious diseases and certain risk factors before a man can become a sperm donor. Some states and local governments may require additional screening. This may include education and employment verification, a physical exam, semen analysis, genetic testing, psychological evaluation, and more.
  3. Preparation: You will likely be asked to abstain from ejaculation, through either sex or masturbation, for at least 2-3 days before sperm collection.
  4. Sperm Collection: This is typically done at an authorized medical clinic, where you will provide a semen sample in a sterile cup through masturbation in a private room.

Your Benefits

All medical costs will be covered, and you will not be responsible for any out-of-pocket expenses during the screening process or the actual donation cycle. Your participation in the sperm donation process is considered a valuable contribution to the intended parents. Depending on your background, compensation typically ranges from $1,000 to $2,000. The full amount will be remitted to you at the end of the sperm collection process.
