About Gestational Surrogacy

Gestational surrogacy is an arrangement in which a woman carries and delivers a baby for someone else. The woman who carries the baby is known as the gestational surrogate or gestational carrier. The parents-to-be, referred to as the "intended parents," are involved in the pregnancy, present at the birth, and become the child's parents after birth.

In gestational surrogacy, the baby is not genetically related to the gestational surrogate. Typically, the egg comes from the intended mother and the sperm from the intended father, although donor eggs, donor embryos, or donor sperm may sometimes be used. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a crucial part of this process, as eggs from one woman are used to create an embryo that is then implanted in the gestational surrogate's uterus. During IVF, fertilization occurs in a laboratory after eggs and sperm are combined. The resulting embryo or embryos are then transferred to the gestational surrogate's uterus.
